Instructions to transfer Microsoft Outlook address book from XP to Vista

If you are a regular user of Microsoft Outlook, then you might want to transfer your Outlook address book while upgrading your system. In order to transfer your address book in Outlook, you have to first copy it to a USB device and then transfer it. You can do this by following the instructions given in this article.

Procedure to transfer Outlook address book from XP to Vista

Mentioned below are the instructions using which you can transfer your Microsoft Outlook address book from Windows XP to Windows Vista.

  1. Kick off this procedure to transfer your Outlook address book by inserting a USB flash drive to your computer/laptop.
  2. Now, open Microsoft Outlook and click on “Files” from the main menu.
  3. Continue with this Outlook address book transfer procedure by selecting “Import and Export” option from the files menu.
  4. Then, click on “Export to a file” option.
  5. The next step in the Outlook address book transfer procedure is to click on “Comma separated values (Windows)” and then “Contacts”.
  6. Now save the .csv file on your desktop for easier access.
  7. Send or copy this .csv file to the USB flash drive.
  8. Then remove the USB flash drive and connect it to the computer having Vista where you want to transfer it.
  9. Open Microsoft Outlook on the Vista computer.
  10. Click on “File” from the main menu and then select “Import and Export” option.
  11. Click on “Import from another program or file”.
  12. Click on “Comma separated values (Windows)”.
  13. Now locate the .csv file that is saved on your USB and click on “Import”.
  14. Finally end this procedure by selecting the desired contacts and clicking the “Next” button.

Once you have successfully followed the above mentioned Outlook address book transfer procedure, your Outlook address book contacts will be transferred.

    I have tried to export contacts from my old XP computer to the Vista system I got recently. I have around 650 contacts in my outlook. I have followed your instructions and got my contacts transferred to the other computer. But when I checked the imported contacts I can see only 356 contacts, I don’t know where the other contacts are. I am missing most of my important contacts. Can you help me with this please?

      I wonder that you might have made groups with the contacts on your old computer and you might have imported only one of the groups to the new computer. Try doing the same procedure again and make sure that you select all contacts option before exporting it. Open the USB to check if you have all the contacts copied before importing the same to the new computer. Delete the contacts that you have already transferred or replace them.

    Thank you for the help. I had grouped the contacts. Is it possible to transfer the contacts as groups that I have already created in my old computer? Can you help me with that?

      Follow the instructions that I have previously given and instead of selecting individual contacts, select the entire contacts from All Contacts which would help you export the entire individual and the contact groups to the USB drive.

      Follow the normal procedure to import the contacts to the other computer and select the option “Replace Duplicates with Items Imported” or the one that you prefer to have.

      Select the destination folder of the contacts when prompted and then click finish.
